Delayed Greening

We want to advise you as our customer that if you have your warm season grass, green -up will be delayed this year.  With frost on the grass and ice on the windshield the warm season grasses are not happy.  Once green-up starts, every night the temperatures drop below 50 degrees,  green-up will be delayed by 3-4 days or more “The lower the temperature the longer the delay.

It could be June before lawns green up all the way.  In low “wet” portions of lawns, there will likely be some turf loss.  This is a worst case scenario, but we wanted to let you know in advance what we expect.

WHAT DISEASES TO LOOK FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR?

Brown Patch Fungus:

This is a soil-bound disease that only needs the right temperatures in the day and night and moisture to start its attack. Here is a link to read more about brown patch fungus and a picture for reference.

Chinch Bugs:

These are tiny little pests, but don’t let their size fool you as they pack a lethal punch by killing turf almost overnight. Here is a link to read more about chinch bugs and a picture for reference.

Three ways to approach brown patch and chinch bugs:

1. Let them run their course over the summer and fix the damaged areas.

2. Be reactive and curatively treat the affected areas with Disease & Insect Control applications as needed.   3. Be proactive and use pre-scheduled Disease & Insect Control applications to stay ahead of any turf stress/loss.

Be our eyes while we are away:

Remember to keep in touch. You see the lawn most everyday so as you see weeds or brown areas, please let us know so we can help.

Preventive or reactive:

Additional Disease & Insect Control applications can be scheduled if you cannot bear the look of brown patches in your lawn over the summer. There are 6 applications remaining that would begin right away. For best results, each treatment needs to be reapplied every 25 to 30 days through October.

If you have further questions or want to schedule these applications, please give the office a call.
