You may see our technicians treating your lawn in January and February and wonder why, because after all, the grass is dormant right? Well, partially. Our warm season grass does go into a dormant stage where your lawn loses its normal green color. You may think it is 'dead' when temps get cold, but don't be fooled! Your grass is not dead. Your lawn is just taking a seasonal pause like the trees, conserving energy back to the roots and waiting for the soil temperature to increase to begin the cycle of gorgeous new green warm season growth again.
As your lawn goes through this normal cycle we spend the cold months doing some very important things. Knowing that there is a lot going in the soil and at the root level, we make sure that adequate fertilizer (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium) are available to help push the new growth up and out when the time is right. Equally important is that we treat any visible winter weeds. Yes, there are a host of invasive weeds that grow in the cool temperatures that are even more noticeable when the grass is dormant that must be controlled.
One of the most important things we do in the dormant season is to apply pre emergent weed control to the soil to prevent the numerous broadleaf and grassy weeds that pop up, especially crabgrass, since it is so difficult to control once it emerges. This time is critical for the success of the entire year. It makes all the difference between a lawn that struggles and one that keeps the weeds to a minimum.
March will be here in a matter of weeks. When it arrives you can rest assured that we were busy making it ready for showtime and all its beautiful spring glory.
